There was an article on this in the British Skeptic. Basically it comes down to psychology. You shell out your hard earned cash for a widget and then unwilling to admit to yourself that you're a fool you sit down a listen carefully to your new improved CD. Naturally you listen more carefully before to notice any changes and ta-dah! you spot effects you've never spotted before.
